Real-time frequency stability controller using a hybrid MCU+FPGA architecture for microgrids
UNR coursework
Real-time frequency estimation and supervisory control for low-inertia microgrids, with estimation on an FPGA and control on a DSP running concurrently.
- Five-stage VHDL pipeline on an Altera Cyclone V FPGA: LTC2308 12-bit ADC acquisition, DC-offset removal, FIR low-pass filtering, zero-crossing frequency estimation, and RoCoF calculation.
- Droop-based PI supervisory control and under-frequency load shedding on a TI TMS320F28335 at a fixed 1 ms period, fed over a 1 MHz SPI link.
- End-to-end latency of 9.3 ms versus 17 ms for a serialized single-processor baseline; frequency nadir improved from −0.571 Hz to −0.247 Hz, with recovery to ±0.05 Hz in 4.95 s after a +0.20 pu step load.
Graph neural network-based distribution system state estimation
UNR coursework
A real-time state estimation framework for distribution systems that uses IEEE 1547 smart inverters as sensors where conventional measurements are sparse.
- Simulated inverter-based measurement scenarios on the IEEE 33-bus system in MATPOWER to train a GNN that estimates bus voltage magnitudes.
- Mean absolute error of 0.027 on the IEEE 33-bus system and 0.099 on the IEEE 14-bus system, benchmarked against conventional WLS estimation.
Comparative study on Kalman filtering for electric vehicle powertrain parameters
UNR coursework, team of three
Sensorless estimation of rotor speed and electromagnetic torque for PMSM and open-end winding induction motor drives.
- Unified nonlinear state-space model for PMSM and OEWIM-DI drives, discretized with fourth-order Runge–Kutta.
- Implemented and compared EKF and UKF observers under EV-like operating conditions.
STM32-based brushless DC motor speed control and analysis
UNR coursework
Speed control and measurement of a BLDC motor with an STM32F767ZI, an electronic speed controller, and a reflective proximity sensor.
- PC-based UI showing commanded versus actual speed with a configurable delay.
- Characterized the pulse width–speed relationship; triggered an LED at a set propeller angle at 10% speed, then ramped speed until the blinking was no longer visible.
Generic Null Convention Logic (NCL) MAC unit
TAMUK coursework
A dual-rail unsigned multiply-accumulate unit designed and verified in VHDL using the asynchronous NCL paradigm.
